Diploma Framing in Houston: What to Know Before You Frame

· By Jay's Frames · Jay's Frames, 218 W 27th St Houston Heights TX 77008

Your Diploma Is Worth Protecting

You spent four years (or more) earning it. A properly framed diploma is one of the few pieces of wall art that legitimately communicates something about who you are — your field, your institution, your credentials. A poorly framed one, or one framed with acidic materials, will yellow and deteriorate within a decade.

Here's what you need to know before you bring your diploma to a frame shop in Houston.

Diploma Paper Types and Why They Matter

Cotton Rag Paper

The most common type for traditional universities — 25–100% cotton fiber, pH-neutral, naturally acid-free. Cotton rag diplomas are the most stable and will last 200+ years if properly stored. They require conservation-grade mat board and UV glass to protect against light damage, but the paper itself won't degrade from internal chemistry.

Parchment or Vellum

Traditional parchment (made from animal skin) is extremely stable and naturally pH-neutral. Modern "parchment" is usually a cotton or wood pulp paper with a parchment-like texture — quality varies. The main risk is dimensional instability: parchment expands and contracts significantly with humidity. In Houston, this means your diploma can ripple or warp if mounted in direct contact with mat board. We use a hinge mount (top edge only) or float mount technique to allow the diploma to move freely.

Standard Wood Pulp Paper

Some diplomas from community colleges, professional certifications, and older institutions use standard wood pulp paper, which is inherently acidic. Left unframed or framed with acidic materials, wood pulp paper yellows from the inside out. Archival framing slows this process significantly.

Standard Diploma Sizes

  • 8.5 × 11 inches — community colleges, professional certificates, smaller programs
  • 11 × 14 inches — common for bachelor's degrees from mid-size institutions
  • 11 × 17 inches — common for larger universities and some graduate programs
  • 14 × 18 inches — law and medical degrees from some institutions

We stock standard diploma frames for all common sizes. If your diploma is an unusual size — many older or international institutions use non-standard dimensions — we custom-build to fit. Never trim your diploma to fit a frame.

Mat Board: Single vs. Double

A single mat gives the diploma a clean, simple presentation. A double mat — a second layer underneath the top mat, revealing a thin strip of color — adds visual depth and makes the frame feel more substantial. For professional offices, a double mat with a school-color accent is a classic approach that reads well from across the room.

All mat board we use is acid-free and lignin-free. A mat is not optional from a conservation standpoint — it creates an air gap between the diploma and the glazing that prevents moisture transfer and physical contact damage.

UV Glass for Houston Diplomas

Houston receives more annual UV radiation than most major U.S. cities. A diploma hung on a wall near a window without UV-protective glazing will noticeably yellow within 5–10 years. With UV glass (97–99% UV block), the same diploma can hang indefinitely without visible light damage.

We offer two main options for diploma work: Tru Vue Conservation Clear (standard UV glass, 99% clarity — right for most diplomas) and Museum Glass (adds zero-reflection coating — ideal for rooms with strong overhead lighting).

Diploma Framing for Houston Medical and Legal Professionals

Medical and legal offices have specific framing needs that differ from home use. We do a lot of commercial framing work for Houston's medical center district and law firms:

  • Consistent presentation — group practices and law firms often want matching frames across a wall of credentials. We can match frame profiles, mat colors, and sizes precisely across multiple pieces.
  • Volume pricing — for 5 or more diplomas ordered together, we offer commercial pricing. Call us at (832) 893-3794 for a quote.
  • Professional installation — we offer hanging and installation services throughout Houston for office credential walls.
