Military Shadowbox Framing in Houston: Honoring Service the Right Way

· By Jay's Frames · Jay's Frames, 218 W 27th St Houston Heights TX 77008

A military shadowbox is one of the most meaningful framing projects a family can undertake. It's a permanent tribute to service — a display that deserves to be built correctly, with materials that will last for generations. At Jay's Frames in Houston Heights, we've built hundreds of military shadowboxes for veterans, active duty families, and Gold Star families throughout the Houston area.

What Goes in a Military Shadowbox

The contents of a military shadowbox depend on the branch of service, length of service, and what the veteran or their family chooses to honor. Common elements include:

  • Medals and ribbons — mounted in branch-specific order of precedence
  • Rank insignia — pinned rank from significant promotions or final rank
  • Unit patches and specialty badges — combat patches, skill badges, unit crests
  • Dog tags — mounted individually or together
  • Service portrait or deployment photo — matted separately within the same box
  • Discharge papers or DD-214 — reduced or full size behind archival glazing
  • Challenge coins — displayed in foam-lined mounts
  • Flag — usually a burial or retirement flag in the standard tri-fold

Not every shadowbox includes all of these. Some of the most powerful military shadowboxes we've built in Houston focus on a single campaign — a Vietnam veteran's medals from one tour, or an Iraq deployment with a unit photo and a few key items. Edit toward meaning, not quantity.

Military Display Order and Conventions

Each branch of the U.S. Armed Forces has specific conventions for how medals and insignia are arranged. These aren't suggestions — they're part of what makes a military shadowbox look correct to other veterans and families who understand the symbolism.

For Army and Marine Corps veterans, medals are displayed in order of precedence (highest to lowest, left to right from the viewer's perspective). The same applies to Air Force and Navy displays. Rank insignia is typically displayed at the upper left or upper right of the box depending on branch convention. Unit patches follow their own protocol.

At Jay's Frames, we research the correct display order for each veteran's branch and service period before we begin layout. If you're unsure what order is correct, bring everything in — we've built enough military shadowboxes in Houston to guide you through it.

Why UV Protection Matters for Ribbons and Fabric

Military ribbons are dyed textile — they fade. Wool and cotton uniform elements degrade under UV radiation, and Houston's UV environment is among the most intense in the continental United States. A military shadowbox displayed near a window without UV glazing will show measurable ribbon fading within 5–10 years.

We build every military shadowbox with UV-protective glazing as standard — Tru Vue Conservation Clear (97% UV block) for most projects, Museum Glass (99% UV block, anti-reflective) for shadowboxes containing signed photos, original documents, or items of exceptional significance. The cost difference is modest. The difference in longevity is decades.

Mounting Methods for 3D Military Items

Medals, dog tags, challenge coins, and rank insignia are three-dimensional. They require a shadowbox depth — typically 2–3 inches — that keeps them away from the glazing and allows each item to be individually mounted without stacking or crowding.

We mount medals and ribbons on archival foam board wrapped in fabric — typically black or branch-color velvet or linen — using museum-quality pins that won't corrode and won't damage the medals. Challenge coins sit in custom-cut foam recesses. Dog tags are mounted on archival backing with stainless hardware. Nothing is glued directly to the backing, which means items can be removed if needed without damage.

Flag Shadowboxes: Honoring a Funeral or Retirement Flag

A folded burial flag or retirement flag in a shadowbox is one of the most emotionally significant pieces we build at our Houston Heights shop. The flag is mounted on a foam backing inside a box sized specifically for the tri-fold — usually 16×20 to 18×22 depending on whether other items are included alongside it.

The case can be built with a traditional walnut or cherry frame for a formal presentation, or with a simpler black frame for a more contemporary look. We always recommend UV glazing for flag cases — cotton flags degrade in UV light, and the American flag colors (particularly the red and blue) fade noticeably without protection.

Professional Military Shadowbox vs. Generic Display

The difference between a professionally built military shadowbox and a generic craft store display case is significant and immediately visible to anyone who knows what they're looking at. Generic cases use non-archival materials, fixed sizing that doesn't accommodate the veteran's actual items, and no regard for branch display conventions. The result often looks improvised rather than intentional.

A professional military shadowbox built in Houston Heights is custom-sized to the items, laid out according to branch convention, mounted with archival materials that won't damage medals or ribbons over time, glazed with UV-protective glass, and built to last generations rather than years.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a military shadowbox cost in Houston?

Most military shadowboxes at Jay's Frames run $350–$650 depending on the number of items, the frame style, and the glazing selected. Flag-only cases typically run $175–$275. We provide a firm quote after reviewing your items at no charge.

Do you know the correct display order for military medals?

Yes. We research the correct order of precedence for each branch and service period before beginning layout. If you're uncertain about what's correct for a specific veteran's service, bring everything in and we'll help you sort it out.

Can you include a photo and documents in the same shadowbox as medals?

Yes. We regularly build multi-element military shadowboxes that combine medals, photos, documents, patches, and flags in a single display. The box depth and internal layout are designed around the specific items being included.

How long does a military shadowbox take to build?

Standard turnaround is 7–10 business days. Rush orders available in 3–5 business days for most projects. Call (713) 481-7673 to confirm availability for time-sensitive projects like memorial services or military retirements.

Do you frame burial flags in Houston?

Yes. We build burial flag cases and retirement flag displays regularly at our Houston Heights shop. Flag cases are built with UV-protective glazing and archival materials as standard. Many families add a photo or a few medals alongside the flag in the same display.
