July 4th Patriotic Shadowbox Framing in Houston: Honor the Ones Who Served

Why July 4th Is the Right Time to Frame a Military Shadowbox in Houston
A military shadowbox is one of the most meaningful framing projects a Houston family can commission — and Independence Day is the natural moment to finally do it. The medals, discharge papers, challenge coins, and folded flags that sit in a drawer or a shoebox represent years of service. A professionally built shadowbox framing display transforms those objects into a permanent tribute that honors the veteran every day, not just on holidays.
At Jay's Frames, located at 218 W 27th St in Houston Heights, we've been building military shadowboxes for Houston families since 2011. Whether the service was recent or decades ago, the pieces inside deserve archival-quality protection and a display worthy of the sacrifice they represent.
What Goes Inside a Military Shadowbox
Every shadowbox we build at Jay's Frames starts with a conversation about what the veteran wants to display and how they want it arranged. Military shadowboxes are highly personal, but most include some combination of the following:
Medals and Ribbons
Service medals — Combat Infantryman Badge, Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal — are typically mounted on a fabric-covered backing board in order of precedence, either in a single row or arranged across the box. Ribbon bars can be displayed alongside full-size medals or in place of them. We use stainless mounting pins and acid-free fabric backing so no adhesives ever touch the medals themselves.
Rank Insignia and Branch Emblems
Collar pins, shoulder boards, qualification badges, and branch-specific emblems are displayed around the medals to give context. For veterans of multiple deployments or special units, unit patches and deployment coins add a second layer of personal history to the display.
Challenge Coins
Challenge coins from specific units, commands, or operations have become one of the most collected and displayed military items. We mount coins in custom-cut recesses in the foam backing — each coin sits securely without adhesive, visible from the front, protected by the shadowbox glazing.
Folded Flag
A tri-folded American flag — whether presented at a retirement ceremony, a funeral, or a change-of-command — is typically the centerpiece of the largest shadowboxes. The folded triangle fits into a deep recess cut to its exact dimensions and is held at a slight angle so the visible corner faces forward. Jay's Frames builds flag cases in depth sizes from 3 to 5 inches, depending on how the flag has been folded and what other items will share the case.
Photographs and Documents
A small framed photograph — service portrait, unit photo, deployment image — can be mounted within the shadowbox or as a companion piece hung alongside it. DD-214 discharge papers and certificates of commendation, printed on archival paper, are sometimes included as well. We treat photographs and documents with the same UV-protective glazing as the other materials.
How Military Shadowboxes Are Built at Jay's Frames
Military shadowboxes are technically more demanding than standard picture framing. Here's how we build them at our Houston Heights studio:
Custom Depth Construction
A standard picture frame has a rabbet depth of 3/8 to 3/4 inch — enough for flat or near-flat items. Military shadowboxes require 2 to 5 inches of interior depth depending on what goes inside. We build each case from the correct moulding profile, joined at the corners with a pneumatic underpinner, and sized to the exact collection being displayed. There are no stock shadowboxes at Jay's Frames — every case is built to the specific items.
Archival Backing and Mounting
The backing board is covered in fabric — most commonly navy, black, or forest green for military displays, though we offer custom colors to match branch colors or personal preference. All fabrics are acid-free. Medals are mounted using stainless steel pins through the ribbon, not through the medal itself. Coins are set in foam recesses. Patches are mounted with archival linen tape or conservation-grade adhesive, reversible for future access.
UV-Protective Glazing
Military ribbons, fabric patches, and photographs are all sensitive to UV radiation. Houston's UV index is consistently high year-round, and south- or west-facing walls receive intense direct light. We use Tru Vue Conservation Clear glass as standard on all military shadowboxes — it blocks 99% of UV and has 99% light transmission, so your display is crystal clear without the color shift of standard glass. For large cases or clients who want zero reflection, we upgrade to Optium Museum Acrylic.
Hanging Hardware
A fully loaded military shadowbox can weigh 15 to 30 pounds. We install heavy-duty mirror-style hanging hardware rated well above the finished weight, with two attachment points for level, secure mounting. For clients who need professional installation in their Houston Heights, Montrose, or River Oaks homes, our installation team handles it — see our art installation services for details.
Houston Has One of the Largest Veteran Communities in Texas
The Houston metro is home to more than 200,000 veterans — one of the largest concentrations in the state. Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base, the Texas Army National Guard facilities, and the long legacy of Fort Hood soldiers who've settled here make Houston a city with deep military roots. Every July 4th, those veterans and their families have another reason to reflect on their service.
Jay's Frames has built shadowboxes for veterans of World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan — and for the families of those who didn't come home. We approach every military framing project with the same care: the objects inside are irreplaceable, and the display should reflect that.
Retirement Shadowboxes: A Different Kind of Military Display
Military retirement shadowboxes are distinct from active-service tribute cases in that they typically span an entire career rather than a single branch of service or deployment. A 20- or 30-year career accumulates a significant collection: multiple ribbon bars from different assignments, rank insignia from each promotion, unit patches from every major command, retirement certificate, and often a shadow of the final assignment.
We work with retiring service members and their families to build retirement cases that tell the career arc — typically in a larger format (24×30 or 30×36 inches) that can hold more items while maintaining visual order. For Houston-area military retirees, these cases often include items from assignments at Fort Hood, Joint Base San Antonio, or overseas deployments represented by challenge coins and unit patches from multiple theaters.
How Much Does a Military Shadowbox Cost in Houston?

- Career retirement shadowbox (large format, full collection): $599–$999
